Why My Computer Is Slow? Top Reasons and Best Fixes

By Dr Irshad Haqyar | ODI Skills Portal

As someone who works daily with computers and helps students at ODI Skills Portal, I often get this question: "Dr Haqyar, why is my computer so slow?" In this article, I will explain the main reasons why your computer is slowing down and share the easiest ways to fix it, step by step.

1. Too Many Programs Running at Startup

One of the first things I check when a computer is slow is the startup programs. Many applications automatically start with Windows, and most of them are not necessary.

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
  • Go to the Startup tab
  • Disable programs that you don’t need immediately

Doing this alone can make your computer start much faster.

2. Malware and Viruses

Malware is another common culprit. I always recommend keeping a good antivirus installed. Viruses quietly consume memory and CPU, slowing your PC down without you even noticing.

  • Install a trusted antivirus like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or Windows Defender
  • Run a full system scan
  • Remove or quarantine any detected threats

3. Insufficient RAM

In my experience, many users underestimate the power of RAM. If your computer has less RAM, it struggles to handle multiple tasks at once.

  • Check RAM usage in Task Manager
  • Upgrade to at least 8GB for smooth multitasking
  • Close unnecessary programs when not in use

4. Hard Drive Issues

I often find that old HDDs or fragmented drives make computers painfully slow. Switching to an SSD or cleaning up your hard drive can make a huge difference.

  • Use Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files
  • Defragment HDD (not required for SSD)
  • Consider upgrading to an SSD for faster load times

5. Overloaded Browser

If your browser feels slow, it’s usually overloaded with too many tabs, extensions, or cached data.

  • Clear browser cache and history
  • Disable or remove unnecessary extensions
  • Use a lightweight browser if needed

6. Outdated Operating System or Drivers

I always remind my students to keep their Windows and drivers updated. Old drivers and missing updates can seriously affect performance.

  • Check for Windows updates
  • Update graphics, audio, and network drivers
  • Restart your computer after updates

7. Background Processes

Many apps silently run in the background, consuming CPU and memory. I personally recommend checking Task Manager regularly to stop unnecessary processes.

  • Open Task Manager → Processes
  • End unneeded background apps
  • Adjust automatic updates and syncing settings

8. Too Many Visual Effects

While Windows animations look nice, they can slow down older computers. I usually advise my students to adjust for best performance.

  • Right-click This PC → Properties → Advanced system settings
  • Under Performance, click Settings → Adjust for best performance

9. Power Settings

Energy-saving modes can reduce performance. I always recommend using High Performance mode if you need speed.

  • Control Panel → Power Options → Select High Performance

10. System Overheating

Overheating can throttle CPU speed. I often check the temperature and clean dust from fans and vents.

  • Ensure proper airflow
  • Use a cooling pad for laptops
  • Keep internal fans clean and dust-free

Final Tips from Me

  • Update Windows and drivers regularly
  • Keep antivirus active
  • Remove unnecessary programs and files
  • Upgrade hardware if required (RAM, SSD)
  • Restart your computer weekly

Following these tips from my personal experience can make your computer faster, smoother, and more reliable. Whether it’s a desktop or a laptop, these fixes are practical and easy for everyone.
